1998 - 1998 Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (Cefas) Survey : ECST 1/98 (part of International Young Fish Survey, Qtr 3 (FSS: YFS))
Young Fish Survey
This survey was undertaken by Cefas as part of the International Young Fish Survey, Qtr 3 (FSS: YFS); Surveys around the British Isles (predominantly the South and East coasts) were completed in late August/early September from 1981 to 2010, to evaluate the recruitment of Sole and Plaice as well collect data on the abundance of small fish. Station, catch, length (all fish species and some crustaceans) and biological data (Sole and Plaice) were collected. Survey took place between 30/08/1998 and 24/09/1998 on East coast YFS Equipment used during this survey : - 1.5 metre push net with tickler chain - Beam Trawl 2m shrimp net fryma liner 3 chains x Survey operations were undertaken on 242 stations 53 different species were caught on this survey

The survey used commercial inshore vessels to sample with a standard 2m beam trawl deployed at fixed stations. Push-nets (1.5m) were also used, on selected beaches at low tide, until 1999. - Two gears were used: 2m beam trawl and 1.5m push-net to target small and juvenile fish (particularly Sole and Plaice) at inshore locations around the UK coast - The coverage of the survey varied over the years - From 2000 onwards actual shot and haul positions were recorded, prior to this only the generic shot and haul positions are provided for a given fixed (prime) station - All commercial fish species were measured. Non-commercial species were not always identified and measured. - From 2000 onwards the recording of benthic data was variable, and in some cases would be for driven by “closed lists” - No benthic data is included prior to 2000 - Biological age data were collected for sole and plaice Species and Gear codelists are available via the additional information source field.
