1986 Eastern Irish Sea Groundfish Survey Catch Data - Silver Star Time Series
A series of groundfish surveys were carried out on the fishing vessel Silver Star from 1976 to 1991 in the eastern Irish Sea. Fishing took place using a Boris Goshawk trawl towed for an hour. This data is from the 3 surveys carried out in 1986. Numbers at length by centimetre of the main commercial fish species are recorded. Station positions by area are recorded. A summary table is included for cruises 02/86 and 03/86 containing catch data for all other species.

Three cruises were carried out in 1986: - **Silver Star 01/86 (19th March - 05th April)** The survey commenced on the morning on March 19th, after only one day's work, gale to storm force winds prevented the vessel from putting to sea for a further six days. Work resumed on the 26th March in the comparatively sheltered waters of Red Wharf Bay, but work was again halted on the following day due to increasing winds. The survey was continued on April 2nd and continued for four days without further interruption by the weather. All 24 groundfish hauls were successfully carried out, catches were unusually light probably due to the severe winter conditions recently experienced. - **Silver Star 02/86 (16th June - 23rd June)** The vessel set out from Conwy on the 16th June and during the next four days favourable weather conditions allowed work to proceed. But on the 20th and 21st June strong north easterly winds prevented the ship from putting to sea. The final to days work were completed on the 22nd and 23rd June. All 24 groundfish survey hauls were successfully carried out. - **Silver Star 03/86 (10th October - 16th October)** Trawling began on 10th October and continued until the 16th with no interruptions from the weather. Additional hauls were made on the 16th at positions 6-12 miles offshore from depths of over 20 fathoms. 24 standard groundhaul survey hauls were successfully carried out, together with 4 additional deep-water hauls.
